"Mandala" literally means "that which extracts the essence." A group of Tibetan monks/scholars will discuss and demonstrate the creation of sand mandalas during a five-day process as a means of promoting harmony and compassion. After the opening ceremony on Tuesday, April 17th, the Tibetan monks will create a sand mandala from 10:30 am to 6:00 pm Wednesday through Saturday. Lectures will be held Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday at 7:00 pm on the following topics: Love vs Attachment; Cultivating Compassion for the Environment; Happiness, Compassion, and Social Action.

During the creation of the mandala, guests are invited to come and go as often as they like and may converse with the monks. A practice table will also be set up so guests can work with the same materials as the scholars with hands-on assistance. A closing ceremony will be held on Saturday the 21st at 3:30 pm. The sand mandala events are free and open to the public, and the lectures will have a suggested donation of $15.
