2024 Cultures of the Americas Seminar
2930 E. 6th Street, Tulsa March 1, 2024 6:00 - 8:30 p.m.
The Helmerich Center for American Research (HCAR) at Gilcrease Museum will host the 2024 Culture of the Americas Seminar. The event will focus on Dr. Elizabeth N. Ellis' new book "The Great Power of Small Nations: Indigenous Diplomacy in the Gulf South", which shares how many smaller Native American nations in the Gulf South wielded power in some underappreciated ways. Following Dr. Ellis' remarks, Dr. William Smith will moderate a robust panel discussion, including OU's Dr. Farina King, about the book's themes. Learn about how Native people in the colonial period influenced empires and nations in America, defied enduring myths of powerlessness or inevitable dispossession, and survived the violence of colonization through resilience, diplomacy, and innovation. Discover the power of archival discoveries to reveal hidden human stories that both challenge our narratives about Native pasts and help us work toward a thriving future.
