The field of medicine conjures images of test tubes and prescription bottles, doctors and nurses, hospitals and emergency rooms. We know that health care workers are well-educated in anatomy, chemistry, and other sciences. But when challenged by major illness or a terminal diagnosis, what we hope for is compassion and care. Instilling empathy is not only essential to “good doctoring,” it can be a natural byproduct of engagement with history, literature, and philosophy.

Authors and contributors: Dr. Sarah W. Tracy, Dr. Ann Dapice, Dana Tiger, Jim Chastain, Dr. Ronald Schleifer, Dr. Jerry Vannatta, Dennis R. Scott, Dr. Philip J. Rettig, Howard Faulkner, and John Fox.
